date: 16/01/2020
It is the first time that Croatia, which joined the EU in 2013, has assumed the Presidency of the Council of the EU. The priorities of the Croatian Presidency – a Europe that develops, a Europe that connects, a Europe that protects, and an influential Europe – coincide with the priorities of the von der Leyen Commission, which will allow the two institutions to work closely together. “A Europe that develops” entails fostering balanced regional development, cultivating a more satisfied and vibrant society, enhancing the competitiveness and skills of citizens and protecting the environment by fighting climate change. “A Europe that connects” is one that has a network economy and uses its full potential. This will require the establishment of a European transport area, high-quality and secure data infrastructure, and an integrated energy market. In a “Europe that protects”, the safety and freedom of every citizen will be guaranteed and treated as a pillar of democratic society and internal security. The Union will also take a leading role on the international stage as “an influential Europe”. In summary, Croatia believes that together, we can be “A strong Europe in a world of challenges.
