President von der Leyen and College of Commissioners visit Zagreb to discuss priorities as Croatian Presidency of the EU begins

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the entire College of Commissioners visited Zagreb from 9-10 January to participate in the inauguration of the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

It is the first time that Croatia, which joined the EU in 2013, has assumed the Presidency of the Council of the EU. The priorities of the Croatian Presidency – a Europe that develops, a Europe that connects, a Europe that protects, and an influential Europe – coincide with the priorities of the von der Leyen Commission, which will allow the two institutions to work closely together. “A Europe that develops” entails fostering balanced regional development, cultivating a more satisfied and vibrant society, enhancing the competitiveness and skills of citizens and protecting the environment by fighting climate change. “A Europe that connects” is one that has a network economy and uses its full potential. This will require the establishment of a European transport area, high-quality and secure data infrastructure, and an integrated energy market. In a “Europe that protects”, the safety and freedom of every citizen will be guaranteed and treated as a pillar of democratic society and internal security. The Union will also take a leading role on the international stage as “an influential Europe”. In summary, Croatia believes that together, we can be “A strong Europe in a world of challenges.
