On Monday 9 April, European Central Bank (ECB) Vice-President Vitor Constâncio presented the ECB Annual Report 2017 to the ECON Committee of the European Parliament. The ECB Annual Report was published in 22 official EU languages on the ECB’s website. It included an annex with the ECB’s response to comments and suggestions raised by the European Parliament in its Resolution on the ECB Annual Report 2016. The response covered areas including the effectiveness of ECB monetary policy measures, the corporate sector purchase programme, the banking union and other issues related to the European financial architecture, market infrastructures and payment systems, and ECB institutional issues such as the need to preserve the ECB’s independence while ensuring adequate accountability for its activities. In addition to presenting the ECB’s policies and activities in the economic and financial environment of 2017, the annual report also reviewed the health of the European financial sector and examined risks and vulnerabilities in the euro area system.
