On 4 May, thousands of visitors, young and old, from Brussels, Belgium, Europe and beyond braved the wintery weather to attend the 27th edition of Open Day of the European institutions. Together, the five institutions welcomed over 30,000 visitors, with the Berlaymont Building alone hosting several thousand. The Open Day was a unique opportunity for citizens to discover how the European institutions affect their lives. Among the many attractions this year, the Commission's audio-visual studios – a first – proved hugely popular, as did many of the activities on offer: the virtual reality experiences presented by many DGs, the kids' corners, the bucolic 'farm to fork' stall, the #EUinmyregion games, the selfie opportunities and more. The ECFIN booth at the Open Day celebrated the extraordinary journey of the #EUROat20. Visitors were encouraged to test their knowledge on the euro and the EMU by taking part in a quiz, putting together puzzles, pressing their own souvenir medal to commemorate their visit or taking a photo to celebrate 20 years of the euro while holding a giant euro coin replica in their hands in front of the #EUROat20 poster wall. This year the Open Day was about empowering EU citizens to choose their future as the European elections will soon be held on 23-26 May. Visitors to the Open Day were encouraged to pledge to vote and take responsibility for the future at thistimeimvoting.eu.
