At a Eurogroup meeting on 21 January, euro area finance ministers discussed the draft Council recommendations on the economic policy of the euro area for 2019. The draft recommendations were issued in the context of the European Semester, the EU's policy coordination mechanism. They will be formally adopted by the Council after endorsement at the March European Council. Ministers also discussed how the euro can further develop its global role to fully reflect the euro area's political, economic and financial weight. The discussion was based on the December 2018 Commission communication "Towards a stronger international role of the euro". The Eurogroup also met in inclusive format to follow-up on the December Euro summit. During this portion of the meeting, EU finance ministers agreed to continue to work toward a significant strengthening of the EMU on the basis of the comprehensive package endorsed by EU leaders. They also exchanged views on the next steps on the European deposit insurance scheme (EDIS) and the budgetary instrument for convergence and competitiveness for the euro area and ERM II member states on a voluntary basis. Eurogroup President Mário Centeno launched a call for candidates to succeed Peter Praet on the European Central Bank Executive Board.
