Let's pay tribute to today's European heroes

70 years after the Schuman Declaration we pay tribute to those of us who are making history today by fighting the virus.

European Union

date:  05/05/2020

The Romanian Doctor Alin Suciu volunteered on a mission to the most affected areas in Italy. The Belgian friends Mohamed, Bilal and Hamza who, together with more than 20 volunteers, deliver food parcels to households in need in Brussels. Many Europeans mobilised to help each other.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all EU countries, but some have been harder hit than others. In this situation, the words of former French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman ring up-to-date Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity.

This idea, embodied in the Schuman Declaration, is considered the starting point of our journey towards the European Union. We used to celebrate the anniversary of this declaration as Europe Day, and by opening the doors of our buildings to the public. Last year we welcomed around eight thousand visitors.

Due to the extraordinary circumstances this year we will make Europe Day shine in a different light: by using the occasion to pay tribute to all those who are getting us through this COVID-19 crisis by obeying the prevention measures  and by continuing their work, helping those in need, keeping Europe going during the confinement period and paving the way to recovery. We salute the courage and dedication of all the front line workers in the EU, especially those in the health and care sectors. We're also thinking of  truck drivers crossing Europe on the EU green lanes to secure Europe’s food supply, the agricultural workers, the doctors and nurses helping out in neighbouring countries, the hospitals treating patients from the other side of the border, the people and companies producing face masks, the researchers developing vaccines and the countries sending medical and protective equipment to where it is needed most. This is solidarity in action – this is what Europe is all about. Together we are stronger.

We will publish the stories of hope and solidarity on our social media channels around 9 May.
