As a member of the Nieuwegein City Council and representing the European Committee of the Regions in the Netherlands, Marieke focuses on adapting public spaces to store water, improving the flow of city canals and building roads that allow water to get to the soil below them.

“These are just a few of the measures we take to adjust to extreme weather resulting from climate change. We also see that clean drinking water resources are becoming scarce. Building circular water-management systems in new high-rise building projects is another important part of our strategic water management.”
