Rodrigo Fernandes, Portugal

date:  29/11/2022

Responsible for innovative environmental software technologies, Rodrigo wants to spread the word about how digital technology can drive climate action. He also aims to raise awareness about the environmental impact of our digital devices.

“While investing in technology and innovation will allow us to decarbonise in the medium to long term, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% now just by leveraging technologies such as artificial intelligence. Another thing that really concerns me is resources and materials, and the short life cycle of technology we use, such as laptops and mobiles. We replace our phones every couple of years – new models come out and people feel pressured to buy them. But what happens to the old devices? That material footprint – the mining for rare metals and lithium – needs to be taken into account.”
