Creating a renewable energy community in Portugal

In Telheiras, Portugal, Climate Pact Ambassador Miguel Macias has been busy coordinating a citizen-led renewable energy project - the Telheiras Renewable Energy Community founded by the Local Partnership of Telheiras and the Lumiar Civil Parish. The partnership brings together 24 members: local authorities, parents and residents, scouts and religious groups, and commerce.

‘It seeks to contribute to the climate transition of the Telheiras neighbourhood,’ Miguel told us.

As part of a pilot project, the group are currently installing solar panels on a local public building owned by the Lisbon Municipality and used for dance classes, workshops and festivals. The panels produce more electricity than the building needs, which makes it possible to share the excess with others, especially with several families in need that have been identified by social services.

‘We hope that the development of an energy community can reduce our carbon footprint as well as promote social inclusion and community empowerment.’
