Welcome to the August edition of our Newsletter! As usual, we are happy to share the latest news and announcements on upcoming activities and opportunities. Read on!

We start, together with Public Libraries 2030 and Lisbon Libraries Network, with introducing a fresh perspective on libraries as bustling public spaces where community members not only meet to learn and interact, but also actively participate in the making of democratic life. Check out the newly published Rough Guide to citizen engagement in public libraries!

Our next highlight is the study on the impacts of citizen engagement in policymaking that we just kicked-off with an exploratory workshop at the end of June.

More exciting announcements are in the Events and trainings section. The Meet the Competence Centre Corner offers an opportunity for members of the Community of Practice to ask questions related to the work of the CC-DEMOS. Find out about our next editions in September and October!

The BiodiverCities Atlas is now out, marking the end of intense research within the BiodiverCities project, showcasing how citizens engage meaningfully to make cities more liveable.

In addition, you will find out about phase 2 of DG REGIO's Call for expressions of interest from public authorities in receiving expert support in cooperating with civil society organisations in testing and assessing innovative citizen participation approaches to managing EU funds under cohesion policy.

We also invite you to read two short reflection pieces: the first on the follow-up to the new generation of citizen panels, while the second tells about the workshop 'Curating matters of care in the Arctic: What does knowledge co-creation look like for policymaking?' that took place in May in Ispra.

Further, you will learn about the ongoing development of a new training package on participatory processes targeted at local, regional and national public administrations.

Last but not least, check out two upcoming events organized in partnership with the Association 'I Musei del Cibo della provincia di Parma', as part of the dissemination efforts of 'Imagining Eat Together'!

Citizen engagement in libraries?

What comes to mind when you think of public libraries? Books – of course. But one also thinks of community, a place of belonging, a place for all members of society to come together. Public libraries are open to everybody – at their core, they are accessible and inclusive spaces.

Meet the Competence Centre on Participatory & Deliberative Democracy

The next ‘Meet the Competence Centre!’ corner will be held on September 18 and October 25, from 2 pm to 5 pm. The Competence Centre is happy to meet members of the Community of Practice or to address specific questions concerning citizen engagement. If interested, book your 30 minutes slot!

Do not miss the chance. The registration for the Autumn School on Citizens' Assemblies is now open. Join the capacity-building event for policy-makers, civil servants and other societal actors to learn how to implement Citizens' Assemblies. Book your place now!

Training for public administrations on participatory processes

CC-DEMOS is developing a training package for EU public administrations at local, regional and national level to support their capacity in engaging citizens in policymaking through co-creation and deliberative processes.

5th Public Participation and Deliberative Democracy Festival

Save the date for the fifth edition of the Public Participation and Deliberative Democracy Festival, which will take place in Brussels, 12-14 June 2024. For this next edition, we decided to focus on the engagement of citizens in environmental issues.

Council of Europe: The second School on Participatory Democracy in Türkiye is afoot

The second School on Participatory Democracy in Türkiye will take place in Ankara. The School is open to Turkish participants who want to broaden their practical knowledge on participatory standards and tools. The deadline for application is 18 September, 6pm CEST.
