Soil and the SDGs: challenges and need for action

A conference organised by the European Commission in Brussels on 25 November 2019, aimed to increase awareness on the fundamental role soils play in achieving several Sustainable Development Goals.
Soil degradation hampers the EU’s environment and climate objectives. Policymakers, scientists, NGOs and industry representatives discussed the necessary policy response.
They highlighted the Common Agricultural Policy as an important tool to programme interventions that preserve and restore soil health, although soil specific targets were called for in all policy sectors.
