OECD - Unlocking Rural Innovation

Strengthening rural innovation is one of the key goals to have stronger rural areas by 2040. The analysis that backed the EU rural vision highlighted the lack of specific knowledge and data on innovation in rural contexts. The work launched by OECD on rural innovation helps to fill the gap. This first of a series of thematic and country reports explores the multi-facetted innovative practices that are already occurring in rural places, and proposes alternative indicators beyond the traditional science and technology measures to capture them.

The research undertaken seeks to improve the understanding of rural innovation as a way to improve its measurement, moving away from classical forms of measurement based only on science and technology indicators. It also analyses the barriers faced by rural innovators and explores ways to remove them. The report recognises the role of social innovation and entrepreneurship.

You can find other studies of interest under the OECD Rural Studies, which explores how to promote the competitiveness of firms and the wellbeing of residents in rural areas.
