Rural depopulation in Spain

date:  24/04/2019

A new case study published by aeidl, shows how immigration was used to revive a depopulated rural area in Spain. The document is also available in Spanish.

The accelerated process of depopulation is one of the main challenges facing large areas of rural Spain. In the most critical areas, population densities have fallen to just five inhabitants per km².

The report describes the Nuevos Senderos (New Paths) programme of the Cepaim Foundation. It is a example of how to successfully integrate a migrant population into a rural area. It shows that if managed correctly, the immigrant population can be one of the solutions to deal with the challenge of rural depopulation.

On the 21st of May 2019, the ENRD Contact Point will organise a workshop on ‘Combatting Rural Depopulation: Creating new opportunities for vibrant rural areas’.
