Uranio empobrecido

6. What harmful effects can uranium have in the environment?

The ecological effects of uranium are less well studied than the human health effects. Available data apply mainly to aquatic species, and there is very little data for terrestrial species. Studies have been used to derive a wide range of ecotoxicity thresholds. As with human health, the main effects are due to chemical toxicity rather than radioactivity. The most sensitive organisms appear to be freshwater invertebrates and freshwater plants, but little is known about effects on marine organisms.
