World Osteoporosis Day: promoting awareness and policy change
By Daniel Navid, Senior Consultant International Osteoporosis Foundation
World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) is celebrated annually on 20th October by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and its national society members throughout the world. WOD provides a crucial focal point for raising awareness on the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, a disease which is of increasing significance as the population grows in size and lives longer.
Osteoporosis, in which the density and quality of bone are reduced, leads to increased risk of fracture. In Europe, it is estimated that approximately 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will sustain an osteoporotic fracture. This year, WOD will see the launch of “Stand Tall, Speak Out for Your Bones”, an IOF campaign which aims to mobilize the power of millions of voters, tax-payers and concerned citizens to highlight the importance of timely osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
This year, a special focus is on Europe, with 2008 as the 10th Anniversary of the first European Community report on osteoporosis and of its eight recommendations for action by governments, which have yet to be fully implemented.” A new IOF report Osteoporosis in the European Union in 2008: Ten years of progress and ongoing challenges has recently been published. This report, the work of the EU Consultation Panel, was launched at a press event in Brussels on 14th October, in the presence of an IOF Women Leader’s Roundtable which included Mrs Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Health. The report is intended to be a catalyst for action by health ministries across the Union.
We invite you to join with local IOF member societies to celebrate WOD 2008.
