About this Portal

What is the Health-EU Portal

The Health-EU Portal has been created by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Consumers. It works as a trustworthy gateway to a wide range of information and data on health-related issues and activities at both European, national and international level. The main characteristics of the Portal are:
Information sources: content is produced by the European Commission; by Member States of the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA), plus EU candidate countries; by international organisations; and by pan-European non-governmental organisations in the area of public health.
Multilingualism: the Portal is available in 22 official languages of the EU.
Quality: the Portal is a gateway to scientifically sound public health information. It complies with the HONcode standard for trustworthy health information: verify here

The Portal is funded under the second Health Programme 2008-2013 and it is intended to permit greater involvement of individuals, institutions, associations, organisations and bodies in the health sector by facilitating consultation and participation. In this framework, attention is given to the right of the EU population to receive simple, clear and scientifically sound information about measures to protect health and prevent diseases.

The Portal is overseen by an Editorial Board, which defines the editorial policy based on the best expert advice of members and in line with the quality criteria set out under EUROPA guidelines. This should cover the quality criteria, language and operational workflow of the Portal.

Information I can find

Access to the information needed is possible via a simple theme structure which presents health-related aspects affecting individuals and their environment.

Each theme leads to its related sub-themes – for example My Lifestyle leads to Nutrition – where there is a comprehensive range of information and links to policies and activities in the European Union. National policies on each topic can be found in the My country tab. Where available, deep links lead the reader directly to the page on the subject required.
On the homepage, the sections on Latest news, major topical Events occurring across Europe and Press Releases give the opportunity to keep up-to-date and get involved in major decisions and events in the health field at national, cross-border and international level. The Latest videos section contains videoclips on health-related subjects produced by the EU and all other contributors of the Portal.

The homepage also highlights articles on EU-funded health projects, publications and health news.
