New frontiers: future political, cultural and scientific challenges for health promotion

Prof. Franco Cavallo, President of the Scientific Committee, 8th IUHPE European Conference on Health Promotion, Department of Public Health, University of Torino

The intense surge of migration to high-income countries demands better comprehension and integration among cultures. There is a need to recognise and understand the existence of health models and beliefs, which are different from those Western cultures are accustomed to. In this context, health promotion is an essential tool for sharing and promoting core values of community living.

Community empowerment is both a key process and objective of health promotion action. It draws on existing resources and assets, wherein professionals and community members from different social and ethnic backgrounds work together to set priorities, negotiate solutions, and make decisions for all interested people, with the aim to increase ownership, enhance social support, achieve better health and improve the quality of life.

The 8th IUHPE European Conference on Health Promotion will address the cultural and scientific challenges for those involved in the health sector, speak to healthy public policy and processes in other sectors, examine incentives and evidence for devising new political strategies for improving people’s lives, and explore solutions to specific community problems. In order to collectively face this challenge and contribute to the development of health promotion in the European region, we invite all those interested - the general public, professionals, and policy makers- to join us in Turin on September 10-13, 2008 (www.hp08torino.org).
