About the innovator

The Rostock-based technology company Gensoric GmbH, a spin-off of the University of Rostock, was founded in 2009. The business focus lies on developing solutions for the chemical industry / electrochemistry. The first product was the ThermaLab (http://gensoric.com/index.php/thermalab). The most advanced application of this technology is the willpower energy system. It is the company’s first solution targeting the mass market. The key technology is self-developed and patented, low-risk and easily manageable technology of directly heated electrodes. This allows to significantly improving the efficiency and accuracy of (bio-) chemical processes.

What is the innovation

Gensoric developed a residential power-to-liquid and CO2 usage system. The willpower-energy system produces methanol by using surrounding resources: CO2, water, and electricity. The core is an internationally patent-protected electro-biocatalytical process technology to convert atmospheric CO2 into methanol. The key of the technology are directed heated electrodes that are coated with enzymes. In a three phase process the used resources are converted to methanol. It is a clean and easy-to-handle energy carrier and can be stored and used for heating or electricity generation. With the willpower energy system, it is possible to be complete self-sufficient.

Out of the lab. Into the market

After implementing a successful willpower energy pilot plant in 2017 as part of the green capital city 2017 in Essen (Germany) the technical revisions for a first marketable willpower energy system are made. Improving the technology day by day we are getting a step closer to have our first marketable product. Before entering the market, we need to certificate the willpower energy system. The certification process is an important step and will need time. First target customers will be single-family-house owners to test and see the practicability for the customer itself. The market entry is planned for 2022.

Benefits of participation in Horizon 2020

The support from the EU made it possible to focus and optimize our technology and be able to build a working pilot plant. The network that we got to be a part of helped us to improve our technical understanding and gave us new ideas.
Getting new input and an outside view on ideas makes it possible to improve your product in a before unknown way.
The Horizon 2020 programme gave us the possibility to build our first pilot plant, which was a big milestone in the development of the willpower-energy system. Because of the support we were able to see how much we can achieve in a short period of time.
