Europe and its citizens face frustration and gratification before the European elections, as the EU stands between new nationalisms and internal consolidation in the face of BREXIT and Trump. So far, however, European elections have failed to generate a democratic spirit of optimism, and citizens are not seeing the European elections as an opportunity to vote for a directional decision on their political future.
