Thanks to a Benelux decision, the Belgian municipality of Lanaken and the Dutch municipality of Maastricht now have a common reference framework for noise standards in the border zone of the 'Albertknoop Economic Zone' located on their territory. This approach ensures equality between companies and efficient noise management for local residents. This Benelux legal solution is unique in Europe and is a model that can be applied in other cross-border industrial areas. The mayors of the municipalities concerned, provincial officials of Belgian and Dutch Limburg and representatives of the Benelux Secretariat-General officially presented the decision on the 19th of January 2018.
