About
Climate change, extreme events, increased urbanization and increased world population are several of the factors driving global challenges for water management.
ICT is a key enable technology with huge potential for new research and innovation to address these challenges. Aware of these, the DG-CONNECT has prompted an initiative to group projects with common research and innovation interest emerged to enhance their outcomes, The ICT4WATER cluster (www.ict4water.eu).
ICT4Water is a cluster of ICT oriented projects, all co-funded by the European Commission, which common goal is to increase efficiency in water management and usage, enabling greater cooperation among water regulators, operators and users by deploying solutions supported by Inew technologies.
A roadmap finalised by the European Commission in August 2016 presents the main gaps and challenges that need to be addressed in the future development of the ICT for water sector: Big Data, Data Infrastructures, Links with Smart Cities, Water-food-energy nexus, Standardization, Circular Economy, Water Recovery, etc..
As follow up to the roadmap, an Action Plan to suggest the creation of a borderless Digital Single Market for water services will emerge from the inputs/discussion gathered from FP7/H2020 research projects - grouped in the ICT4Water cluster - and taking into account other relevant reports from water related initiatives.
This initiative contributes to the Connected Digital Single Market and the Resilient Energy Union objectives by promoting energy efficient smart ICT technologies in the water sector. The innovation potential includes the shift from pilot scale initiatives to wide market uptake to end up with the creation of a European Digital Market for energy efficient water services.
