This publication seeks to provide a key to understanding the complexity, richness and diversity of the examples of territorial cooperation in Europe and illustrating their role in the process of European integration. It will help to make the link between the history of the EU and the "micro histories" of the local and regional territories involved in territorial cooperation in Europe clear and comprehensible.
Secondly, this work forms part of a wider project, which is the production of a critical dictionary of cross-border cooperation in Europe: it compiles an analytical dictionary of cross-border cooperation in Europe. This dictionary comprises two distinct parts: a first theoretical and conceptual part is dedicated to the terminology and tools of cross-border cooperation, and a second geographical part presents an inventory of European cross-border regions in the EU.
