Founded in 2010, Yousician is the largest and fastest growing music education company in the world. We are more than 90 people of 21 different nationalities based in Helsinki and New York. We are a diverse bunch of hardcore audio engineers, music educators, software developers, game designers, marketers and visual artists. What unites us all is our love for music and the shared belief that each of us can contribute to something big: helping to reimagine the future of music education.

What is the innovation

Yousician is a mobile service that uses advanced audio technology combined with music exercises to motivate users to learn and play an instrument. Users play along on their real instruments as the app provides instruction. Yousician has both the benefits of private lessons, guidance and feedback, and of self-learning methods such as books and videos, affordability and 24/7 access anywhere. Because of its game-like design, Yousician keeps users motivated to practice and lets them connect to other players around the world. Yousician's educational approach is based on the best pedagogical practices and the learning patterns of millions of users.

The Next Billion Musicians -project has enabled Yousician to expand the service by introducing a new broad library of famous songs, and a new way to learn singing. The funding also allowed the development of a more personalised experience for users and built technical and commercial readiness to scale the service to the global market.

Out of the lab. Into the market

As an online software service, we can roll out new features to users very rapidly in every country of the world. The main parts of the innovation are already delivered to the market with great success; millions of users have experienced the new songs and are learning to sing with Yousician. This has created a clear uplift in sales as well.

As a next step, we will use the technologies and capabilities created in the project as a stepping stone to expand the service to new markets and user segments. By the end of the project, we will have much-improved user experience and can start full global expansion.

This H2020 project helps Yousician become a successful high-growth tech company of the sort Silicon Valley brings out. With the support of the funding, we can focus on developing capabilities that take us one big leap towards our mission to make musicality as common as literacy. By giving millions of people access to music education, this project will massively grow the whole industry, ranging from music schools, bands, and artists to instrument manufacturing.

The experience of participating in the programme has been very positive for us and in addition to funding, we have got great support from the team in EC.
