The main aim of this guide is to encourage assistance and family mediation for minors so as to educate them in the safe and responsible use of the internet. 

This guide has been developed as an itinerary for family mediation to facilitate the task, taking into account the challenges involved in educating in such a complex environment, in continuous evolution and where the vast majority consider themselves as inexperienced and unskilled.

All along this itinerary filled with recommendations, all the necessary strategies and steps will be tackled to progress on the educational activity of parents and guardians:  

• Strategies to support you on the supervision, orientation and assistance for your son or daughter on the internet, and when limits and rules need to be set up.
• Parental mediation guidelines depending on the age of the minor; these guidelines can evolve depending on the childrens’ needs and maturity.
• Specific recommendations on the use of technologies: netiquette; how to prevent cyberbullying; how to manage privacy and digital identity; and finally how to protect themselves against viruses or fraud.
• How to react in the event of an incident online: cyberbullying, identity theft, sexting.

Esta guía tiene como objetivo fomentar el acompañamiento a los menores y la mediación familiar para educar a niños y adolescentes en el uso seguro y responsable de Internet, y ser capaces de reflexionar sobre los usos más adecuados de Internet en cada momento. Conscientes del reto que supone educar en un entorno tan complejo, en continuo cambio y en el que son mayoría los que se consideran inexpertos y poco habilidosos, hemos elaborado esta guía a modo de itinerario de mediación parental para facilitar la tarea.

A través de este itinerario de recomendaciones se abordan las estrategias y pautas necesarias para avanzar en la actividad educadora de los padres o tutores:

• Estrategias para ayudaros en la supervisión, orientación y acompañamiento de vuestro hijo en Internet, y a la hora de establecer límites y normas.
• Pautas de mediación parental en función de la edad del menor, con las que ir evolucionando en función de sus necesidades y madurez.
• Recomendaciones específicas sobre el uso de las tecnologías: para comportarse de manera adecuada en línea, prevenir el acoso, gestionar de manera apropiada la privacidad y la identidad digital, y protegerse ante virus y fraudes.
• Cómo actuar en caso de producirse un incidente en Internet: ciberacoso, suplantación de identidad, filtración de imágenes comprometidas (sexting).

Internet Segura for Kids (IS4K) is the Safer Internet Centre for minors in Spain, working with the aim of providing a safe environment for children and young people in the use of internet and technologies.

IS4K is led and coordinated by the Spanish National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) depending on the Secretariat of State for Digital Progress (SEAD), and is part of the pan-European INSAFE network of SICs within the Better Internet for Kids Programme of the European Commission.
