Going Local Cyprus: “Challenges for Cyprus: Digital Single Market and ICT Innovation”

The internet and digital technologies are transforming our world. But existing barriers online mean citizens miss out on goods and services, internet companies and start-ups have their horizons limited, and businesses and governments cannot fully benefit from digital tools.

It's time to make the EU's single market fit for the digital age – tearing down regulatory walls and moving from 28 national markets to a single one. This could contribute €415 billion per year to our economy and create 3.8 million jobs.

Contribute with your thoughts, questions and suggestions to setting the agenda for this upcoming event!

Hi,

I'm a Cypriot who lived outside of Cyprus for 20 years and returned two years ago for personal reasons - retaining my employment with a multinational technology company called National Instruments - were I still serve as a business Director for our Academic segment.

Given that my job is international but my home life is in Cyprus I get exposed to the differences and the state of play when it comes to the Digital Economy and capitalizing on technology and the digital market in Cyprus. I would like to make a recommendation toward your event - in the hope that it contributes and adds value to a fruitful discussion that is an agent for positive change.

1) Public policy for encouraging technology, digital and ICT investments in Cyprus
2) Challenges of existing digital technology providers in Cyprus trying to take advantage of the single market
3) Applying capital to high value, high risk job creation in technology (a combination of public policy, etc)
4) Entrepreneurship skills and their role in capitalizing on a digital single market in the EU.

I also believe it is imperative that you include industry, academic and public policy participants in this forum. Industry should include venture capital, banks, large industry and small company participation and public policy should be a a senior enough level to demonstrate a true willingness to drive top down policy in this area.
