AI best practices
Several prompts have been developed to assist with writing and updating Statistics Explained articles using AI, available in both the AI Lab and GPT@EC.
AI Lab (creating new articles and updating existing articles)
The AI Lab is a testing environment for new prompts, such as 'Statistics Explained' and 'Images' which are accessible only to Eurostat accounts.
- Statistics Explained prompt- it reads and interprets data from multiple formats, including Excel files. It assists in drafting new articles or updating (rewriting) existing ones. It is important to remember that the results should always be double-checked by the writer and adapted to the guidelines, as the tool might make errors
- Images prompt- it extracts information from images and converts it into text. The prompt is able to analyse various types of images, including graphs and tables, and can be also used in drafting the alternative text. Like Statistics Explained prompt, the data produced needs to be double-checked and adapted accordingly

More information about the AI Lab and available prompts can be found in the AI Lab presentation.
GPT@EC (rewriting existing articles)
Below, you can find the best practices for rewriting existing Statistics Explained articles:
- make sure to follow the Commission AI guidelines: Guidelines for staff on the use of AI
- feel free to use the built-in prompts for writing and updating new articles: GPT@EC

If you want to learn more about both tools, please refer to the AI tools presentation
- ensure that you do not upload confidential data to the tool
- if you wish to use your own personalised prompt, please refer to the bullet points below and/or the presentation that demonstrates prompt testing and the differences between the commercial ChatGPT and GPT@EC: 2nd AI tools workshop
What to keep in mind when creating/ updating text using GPT@EC based on the most common mistakes made by this tool?
- ensure sources are accurate
- use digits instead of words for numbers (e.g. 17 instead of seventeen)
- include internal links, especially to glossaries
- text in British English
- correct bullet points structure and dashes
- follow proper number formatting (e.g. 110 000 instead of 110,000)
- consider the appropriate use of jargon
- ensure no critical information is missing
- when replacing old text with new text, make sure to add the new data in the prompt as the Commission AI tool doesn’t read the changes from the Word file
- GPT@EC works better on its own; try not to ask for a specific article to be updated with new information. Instead, it’s better to create a new article or analyse the data
Advice to create your own prompt
- be as detailed as possible
- make sure to double-check the text
