The French retailer Intermarché ran a highly successful 2014 campaign to promote the sale of abnormal fruit and vegetables previously considered unmarketable.
In a direct attack on unnecessary food waste, the campaign achieved remarkable social media attention in France, increased sales in the supermarket and led rival firms to launch similar offers.
The initiative followed the call by the European Parliament to make 2014 the European Year Against Food Waste.
