Reducing Member States’ reliance on agricultural pesticides can help tackle biodiversity decline. A cooperative of apple producers in Greece has used CAP funding to show how this can happen in practice.
The Zagorin Hellas project in Thessaly replaced synthetic insecticides with a pheromone- based alternative approach to managing pest damage from Codling moths. CAP co-finance for agri-environment activity was used to help establish a system of non-toxic pheromone traps throughout the orchards as part of an integrated pest management solution.
Project results have proven effective in mitigating pest damage while supporting a recovery of wild flora and fauna. It has been particularly beneficial for pollinators and other insects that are useful for the apple trees. Find out more about this good practice approach to pest control from the ENRD website’s RDP project database.
