The visualisation maps of MATILDE regions represent the territory and its dynamics based on scientific evidence. They focus on territorial, socio-economic and socio-demographic characteristics of the regions.

To provide visual, cartographic representations of migration grounded in sound quantitative data, it is crucial to stimulate a collective rethinking and a shared visualisation of the impact of migration on European rural and mountainous regions. The maps, based on data collected by the MATILDE project provide accurate information about the territorial characteristics of the regions in focus, the distribution of Third Country Nationals (TNCs) within them and their sociodemographic characteristics.

The maps are used as an input to stimulate reflection and discussion at the local level, through the involvement of local stakeholders, on the multi-layered impact and diversified presence of TCNs in MATILDE regions. The aim is to raise a new collective awareness on the territorial dimensions of migration and, at the same time, co-produce together with the local stakeholders, a new representation of the reality through images.

There is a detailed description of the dimensions and indicators considered for the production of the maps and narrative profiles for each MATILDE region.

The maps show that there is a significant degree of diversity in MATILDE regions in terms of spatial and territorial characteristics. They also show that MATILDE regions encompass a significant variety of migration profiles. More specifically, there is heterogeneity in terms of share, development and socio-demographic profiles of the TCNs that live in MATILDE regions.

Relevance for monitoring and evaluation of the CAP

Migration has an important effect on local and regional development and inclusion aspects related to the migration phenomenon increasingly form part of local development strategies. Therefore, the mapping of spatial, territorial and socio-demographic characteristics of migration at the regional level can be useful for CAP evaluations in two ways:

  1. For providing the contextual background, in terms of the territorial and socio-demographic context (pertinent to balanced territorial development) including baseline data and potentially also data for context indicators.
  2. For understanding the changing population dynamics and their potential implications for local development and therefore better understand the intervention logic of local development strategies in the context of LEADER.

MATILDE maps are revealing a hidden phenomenon in rural areas, e.g. in regions like Andalusia, in Spain, there are lots of migrant workers who are not visible (not registered in national statistics, hidden economy). Also the qualitative focus captures information that is difficult to capture with metrics, so it is important that they combine qualitative with qualitative approaches. The information provided in the maps can also be used by LAGs for policy planning at the local level, while also serve as baseline information.

The typology of data collected by the MATILDE project for developing the mapping of migration, as well as the indicators used, are clearly described and can therefore be used by other regions/countries to collect and map information for the same purpose.
