Getting out of Poverty - Jelka and Augustin – Slovakia Augustin and Jelka, from just outside Bratislava, are homeless. In Slovakia, 11 % of the population is at risk of poverty, with the threshold for a single person being at risk of poverty being EUR 240 per month. To break out of isolation, the couple is taking part in the Theatre with No Home initiative, a place where people with disabilities and those experiencing homelessness rehearse every week. Getting out of Poverty - Manuel – Portugal Manuel is 43 years old and lives in Lisbon. Suffering from a mental health condition, Manuel had to deal with a lot of problems and ended up homeless. For more than 12 years he lived on the street, isolated from everything and everyone. In Portugal, the ‘at risk of poverty’ income threshold is EUR 407 per month. Currently, 19 % of the country’s population is at risk of poverty and social exclusion. Thanks to the Housing First Programme, which focuses on homeless people with mental health problems, Manuel received the support and assistance he needed and now has an apartment and has learnt how to manage his life. * Data from 2008, latest data available. |

Getting out of Poverty - Agusta – Iceland In Iceland, the threshold for being at risk of poverty is EUR 1,611 with 10 % of the population subsequently at risk of poverty and social exclusion. Augusta, diagnosed with a sever mental illness, lives alone and is unemployed. Thanks to the help she got from the Hlutverkasetur centre, which gives her the opportunity to meet people and to take part in activities at her own pace, she is slowly moving back into society. * Data from 2008, latest data available.
