The Biobased Industries Consortium

The Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) is a European association representing multiple and diverse sectors spanning the full length of the value chain, from the primary sector up to market actors. The BIC is also the private partner in the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU). The common element of all members is “the belief that new connections and innovations across different industries and disciplines are needed to create innovative circular bio-based value chains.” 

BIC members and the European Commission are responsible for co-drafting and approving the SIRA – the Strategic Innovation and Research Agenda. This sets out the main technological and innovation challenges to establishing a sustainable and competitive bio-based industry in Europe. They also define the topics and approve the BBI JU’s Annual Work Programmes each year. Both processes include DG AGRI. 

The BBI JU has participated in structuring the European bioeconomy through creating new cross-sectoral bio-based value chains and involving new actors as strategic partners, such as the primary sectors. It also stimulates new green growth, particularly in rural areas, whilst contributing to the objectives of the EU’s Green Deal.  

BIC bioeconomy platform 

The BIC bioeconomy platform to connect European regions and the bio-based industry is now live.  The concept is based on a digital, partnering platform where regions and industry can make contact based on mutual interest. The platform focuses on creating local value chains and access to finance, namely helping regions and industry bridge the gap between bio-based investment opportunities and financial incentives at regional level. 

Reports

BIC also seeks to enhance the participation of actors from the EU-13 and are developing several reports identifying the bio-based potential in Central and Eastern European countries, including new green growth opportunities for the primary sectors and beyond. The BIC country report for the Baltic States are already available.
