Commissioner Martine Reicherts meets Italian Minister of Justice, Andrea Orlando

Remembering the past to build a better future

Today Martine Reicherts met with Andrea Orlando, Minister of Justice for Italy, to discuss a number of key Justice files the Commission is striving to advance in close cooperation with the Italian Presidency of the Council of the EU. The EU Data Protection Reform, the European Public Prosecutor's office and Justice for Growth were the main points of their talks, ahead of the Justice and Home Affairs Council in October.

Commissioner Martine Reicherts said: "Minister Orlando and I both agree on the political priorities for the EU in the Justice area, and I am pleased that the Italian Presidency maintains ambitious plans, with a particular focus on the EU Data Protection Reform and the European Public Prosecutor's Office. I now hope this ambition will lead to progress on these crucial files at the Justice and Home Affairs Council in October. As we are stepping out of the shadow of the crisis, I am also looking forward to working in close collaboration with the Italian Presidency on a number of initiatives in the area of Justice, to help bring about economic growth in the EU."

Today's discussion kicks off a series of meetings for Commissioner Reicherts with representatives of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the EU. On 4 and 5 September, Ms Reicherts will be in Rome, where she will meet Mr Giuliano Poletti, Labour Minister of Italy, and Mr Sandro Gozi, Undersecretary of State for European Affairs of Italy. Ms Reicherts will conclude her visit Rome by participating in a conference on the Common European Sales Law as a key initiative for the EU's Digital Agenda.
