European Citizens' Iniative report, just adopted

Three years after the European Citizens' Iniative (ECI) entered into force, the Commission takes stock of past and present challenges, and future trends.

Since 2012, this direct democracy tool - enshrined in the Treaty of Lisbon - has had a busy life with over 30 registered initiatives and more than 6 million support statements collected.

However the functioning of the ECI has suffered from some shortcomings, and recently, activity has slowed, with only 3 initiatives currently open for collection, while expectations of the stakeholders are high with regard to the review process.
