  1. 11/12/2014 - Corrigenda to the annexes of the Regulation on the citizens' initiative have been published in 16 languages. The resulting linguistic modifications have been incorporated in the Commission IT tools assisting the organisers, namely the Commission software and the organiser accounts on this website.
  2. 10/11/2014 - An updated version of the document indicating which form you can use to give your support to a citizens' initiative depending on your citizenship and residence is now available.
  3. 28/08/2014 - An updated version of the Guide to the European Citizens' Initiative is now available in all official EU languages.
  4. 10/07/2014 - Right2Water Initiative: The Commission organizes a stakeholder meeting on benchmarking of water quality and services on 9 September 2014 in Brussels. The exercise aims to increase transparency on performance of water and sanitation services. Questions can be sent to EC-WATER-BENCHMARKING@ec.europe.eu .
  5. 01/07/2014 - The minimum numbers of signatories per Member State have been modified to take into account the change in the basis for calculation (the number of Members of the European Parliament per Member State). These numbers will apply to all initiatives registered as of 1st July 2014. Check the new numbers.
  6. 23/06/2014 - Right2Water Initiative: a public consultation on the Drinking Water Directive has been launched as part of the follow up actions. See press release.

  16. 05/02/2014 - A public hearing on the first initiative submitted to the Commission, right2water, will take place on 17 February 2014 at the European Parliament.   17. 20/12/2013 - A first European Citizens' Initiative having gathered the required number of signatories has been submitted to the Commission. The Commission has 3 months to answer. See press release and examination procedure.
  18. 02/11/2013 - the first eight European Citizens' Initiatives (ECIs) arrived yesterday at midnight at the end of their collection period. See 31 October Press release.
    Three of them, Right2Water, One of Us, and Stop Vivisection, declare having reached the target of one million signatures in the EU and a minimum number of signatures in at least seven Member States. The statements of support have still to be verified by the competent national authorities before the formal submission of these initiatives to the Commission.
  19. 04/10/2013 - A new registration form as well as new statement of support forms will be available from 8th October. Please see Commission delegated Regulation (EU) No 887/2013 of 11 July 2013 for full details.
    Organisers of the currently registered initiatives will be able to continue using the current version of the statement of support forms or to start using the new version from 8th October.

  21. 29/04/2013 - A set of guidelines and recommendations for the practical implementation of the European Citizens’ Initiative, intended for the use of competent national authorities and organisers, is now available. They cover the various stages of the ECI procedure, from registration with the Commission through to the verification of statements of support.
  22. 31/10/2012 - As a response to issues faced by the organisers during the start-up phase, the Commission has decided that it will exceptionally accept the statements of support collected until 01/11/2013 for all currently registered initiatives.
  23. 31/10/2012 - First European citizens' initiative running on Commission's servers, "Fraternité 2020", can now start collecting statements of support online, following the certification of their system by the competent national authority of Luxembourg - Press release
  24. 04/09/2012 - The first initiative - right2water - has started collecting statement of supports online. Its online system has been successfully set up with a private host provider and certified by the competent national authority. Press release
  25. 17/08/2012 - Exceptional assistance by the Commission in the start-up phase. To help get the first European citizens' initiatives off the ground, the Commission has, as an exceptional measure, offered its own servers to organisers having a hard time finding a host provider, and is assisting them all the way in preparing for the certification of their online collection system by the competent national authority. This will also be incorporated in the Commission software for which a new release will take place this week. Potential organisers should make sure to use this updated version in their system
