Interreg V-A - Italy-Malta

Programme description

Main objectives

Strategically, the programme will promote innovation, a safer environment, the preservation of natural and cultural resources and land and sea safety measures to improve the quality of life and health of the citizens. It will also address climate change issues, sustainable mobility, and employment and education in the cross-border area. Actions in these priority areas will be complemented by efforts to foster closer cooperation of administrations contributing to creating an integrated and sustainable development of the border region.

To achieve these strategic objectives, the programme aims at increasing the number of joint innovation projects, developing new models for services and public administrations, enhancing competitiveness of SMEs, increasing the number of strategic actions towards a sustainable labour mobility, promoting prevention and resilience towards environmental risks, and protecting land and sea bio-diversity.  

Funding priorities

The programme will focus on the following three priorities:

  • Promoting sustainable and smart growth through research and innovation
  • This priority aims at investments in research and innovation (R&I) supporting the development of products and services for clusters, strengthening innovation through living labs/hubs for services to businesses and public administrations, enhancing the productive system and spin-offs between universities and enterprises, and promoting cross-border mobility for researchers.

  • Promoting the competitiveness of the cross-border area
  • This priority aims at promoting entrepreneurship via the creation of new businesses in sectors related to safeguarding the environment and improving the quality of life and health of citizens, supporting SMEs in developing cross-border services leading to the creation and expansion of social innovative realities (co-working spaces, fab-lab, etc) and fostering  cross-border job markets and networks to facilitate workers' mobility.

  • Protecting the environment and promoting resource efficiency
  • This priority aims at promoting investments to address specific risks, developing disaster management tools contributing to the safety in the cross-border area and enabling joint risk management to mitigate the effects of climate change. This priority also aims at reducing marine hazards and other natural risks and protecting the bio-diversity.

    Some of the expected results

    • 100 supported enterprises of which 20 developing innovative services and new technologies
    • 95 additional public institutions in charge of adoption of strategies to tackle climate change
    • Development of several projects related to the preservation and attractiveness of the territory
    • Establishment of 3 cross-border networks which would promote jobs, satisfy supply and demand in the cross-border labour market and produce action plans for raising awareness and facilitating the management of biodiversity.
    • 200 participants engaged in sustainable cross-border mobility initiatives
    • 4 awareness-raising campaigns for the proper use of the protected areas
    • Increased use of technological systems to monitor the cross border area.
