A bus trip through poverty

As a part of the European Year 2010 for combating poverty and social exclusion, the delegation of the European Union in Norway invited journalists on a guided bus trip through Oslo, to get a glimpse of what poverty means in Norway.

The bus trip included several stops, where new guides boarded the bus to tell their story about poverty in Oslo. The guides included both ambassadors for the European Year and other NGO representatives working with social questions in Oslo. One of these was Tone Lund Georgsen from the Salvation Army, leader of the "Slum Station" in Oslo. She put a perspective on the situation in Norway, describing how children experiencing poverty often are socially excluded by not being able to participate in school journeys or birthday parties for their friends.

One of the ambassadors for the European Year participating in the excursion, was Honoratte Muhanzi Kashale, representing the NGO Bibi Amka, meaning "Woman, wake up". Her organisation helps African women, children and youth coming to Norway by promoting their needs and rights.

The last stop of the bus was at the EU delegation in Oslo, where the journalists for a light breakfast and were informed about the European Year in general. The journalists used this opportunity for interviewing the guides, and several reportages on the event were aired the same afternoon, with others to follow.
