The role of equity in financing the economy

European companies rely more on banks for funding than companies in the US. Stronger capital markets, particularly stock markets, could help ease funding constraints due to overreliance on banks and help some overly-indebted EU companies. It would also help to improve risk sharing across Member States. In the context of building a Capital Markets Union in Europe, the Commission is working to diversify firms' funding sources.
