The protection of the euro against counterfeiting is a responsibility of both the national authorities of the Member States and the EU institutions. These combined forces focus on prevention, cooperation , training and repression which are the 4 pillars to counter the threat of counterfeiting.
A substantial increase can be noticed when comparing 2014 with previous years of the number of counterfeit coins detected before entering into circulation. This is due to a law enforcement action in Italy, the second of 2014. The overall number of counterfeits (notes and coins) remains low.
