The incoming Hungarian Presidency welcomed by the College

17/11/2010

On the 17th of November, the Hungarian government visited the European Commission in Brussels. This visit served as a preparation for Hungary's Presidency of the Council in the first half of 2011.

The Hungarian ministers and state secretaries joined in the College meeting, and they also held a working lunch together. This was followed by thematic clusters, in which the ministers discussed with the Commissioners their agenda.

The Hungarian Presidency considers it a priority, among others, to promote growth, jobs and social inclusion, to strengthen the economic policy coordination of the Member States, to implement the Europe 2020 Strategy, to support small and medium sized enterprises (the engines of job creation), to tackle the demographic challenge, to improve family policies and alleviate child poverty, and last but not least to acheive a breakthrough in the area of Roma inclusion.

"Hungary, as a third member of the Trio Presidency, takes over a heavy agenda from Spain and Belgium in the area of employment and social affairs" - Commissioner Andor commented. The European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion also said: "Hungary thus has an opportunity to shape the future of the European social model and make a decisive contribution to the implementation of Europe 2020."
