Plastics and Rubbers
Recommended minimum quantity for each final sample 200 g

1 m2 or 10 m depending on the shape of the product to be sampled

Applicable standards (ISO and EU Norms) and relevant legislation

Equipment needed

Suggested sampling tool depending on the method used

  • General tools: knife, scissors, saw etc.
Containers to be used for the sampling
  • Glass bottles (G01)
  • Metal containers (M01)
  • Cardboard box (R01)
  • Plastic bags (P00)
  • Plastic bottles (P03, P04)
Sample containers must be clean and free from all substances which might contaminate the material being sampled (such as water, dirt, lint, washing compounds, naphtha and other solvents, soldering fluxes, acids, rust, and oil).

Sampling plan
Type of consignmentProcedure
Consignment for customs clearance One aggregate sample consisting of an appropriate number of incremental samples chosen randomly or systematically throughout the consignment. When you are satisfied the consignment is homogeneous, one incremental sample is usually taken as representing the goods covered by the same customs declaration.

Rolls with filaments Measure 10 m of the filament and cut it with a pair of scissors or a knife.

Rolls with foil, strips, floor coverings, wall or ceiling covers

Cut approx. 1 m2 (piece of 100 cm x 100 cm) with the appropriate tool (scissors or knife).
Tubes, pipes, hoses Cut approx. 1 m of the tube, pipe or hose with a saw, scissors or a knife depending on the material the sample is made of.

Plates, sheets, film, foil, strips, floor, wall or ceiling coverings in tiles

Take as many plates, sheets or tiles that would cover a surface of 1 m2 as sample.
Articles 1 piece or refer to the specific sampling card of ‘Retail packages and finished articles’.


Handling of samples
General comments Taking samples:
  • Where there is any doubt over the uniformity of the product, for example where there are visible differences between the individual pieces, you may take more samples to ensure your sample is representative.
Packing the samples:
  • Keep the final samples out of direct sunlight.

Sampling form
  • Fill in the sampling form. One copy should be attached to the samples and one copy should be kept for the record.
Transport
  • The samples should be kept at room temperature in a dry and well-ventilated place. They must be protected against light and cross-contamination by other material and other situations which would damage the sample.
Storage
