Slovenia’s Tehnopark Celje brings science closer to people

  • 26 Jan 2022
A building that once housed an iconic former department store in the centre of Slovenia’s third largest city has come back to life with a fresh appearance and new content to become the country’s largest park for promoting science, technology and innovation and a place where science lives.

The previously bustling Celje landmark had been empty for many years before municipal officials decided to buy it, repurpose it and breathe new life into the building and its immediate surroundings.

The building has been turned into an interactive and fun science centre, a place which serves as a landmark and restores the area. It is also a place which brings science closer to the general public in an innovative, attractive and fun way.

Different interactive themed stations set up across the park allow visitors to learn about physics, natural sciences, technology, the human body, ecology, astronomy and challenge them with various tests.

As many as 53 research stations are designed in an interactive way and offer insights and new knowledge by encouraging visitors to actively take part in the activities offered. The park’s designers also wanted to integrate the visitor experience with the local setting.

The city of Celje thus appears as the backdrop for many stations, bringing the story of the city and its surroundings closer to the visitors. For example, a flight simulator takes visitors on a flight above the streets of the city’s centre.

The park 4 000 sq. m. park focuses on science and technology, subjects where careers are, as a rule, less attractive. Indeed, promoting science, technology and innovation and raising interest in these fields are the main goals of Celje Tehnopark.

The building was constructed in the 1970s and was home to the first modern department store in Celje. It even boasted escalators and air conditioning. The renovated building continues to pursue its mission of providing a modern, attractive and at times innovative approach.
