REGIO Annual Activity Report for 2022 published

Would you like to know how REGIO responded to the challenges of 2022, supported the green and digital transitions, and advanced key priorities? What concrete benefits did cohesion policy bring for citizens? And how did our management and control systems hold up? The answers to all this – and more – can be found in the newly published REGIO Annual Activity Report.

2022 was again a challenging year. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused upheaval - with a rise in commodity prices, disruption of energy markets and high inflation. It also triggered one of the largest and fastest refugee movements Europe has ever seen. REGIO responded strongly again.

At the same time, the 2021-2027 programmes had to be completed to unleash investments worth a total of EUR 545 billion, of which EUR 378 billion of EU money. These investments are vital to foster socio-economic convergence, territorial cohesion, a social and inclusive Europe and a smooth and fair green and digital transition.

The AAR report shows the role played by this Directorate-General in 2022. The AAR demonstrates the strengths of the policy, its flexibility to respond to new needs and challenges and the benefits for people and businesses. The report also identifies challenges and areas where there is room for progress.

The AAR also paints a comprehensive picture of the functioning of the management and control systems of cohesion programmes. For 2022, reserves were placed on 62 programmes. This is similar to previous years, and corrective actions will be taken to ensure that the EU budget is properly implemented.
