Greener transport infrastructure in Lille thanks to EUR 276 million from EIB and European Commission

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Commission are supporting Lille with EUR 276.5 million to modernize transport infrastructure as part of the city’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

This includes a EUR 245 million loan from the EIB, complemented by a EUR 31.5 million grant from the European Commission through the Public Sector Loan Facility (PSLF) under the European Green Deal’s Just Transition Mechanism.

The project, Green Mobility (GREENMO), will modernize Lille’s public transport system, including replacing 30 trams and adding 42 hydrogen-powered buses. Additionally, the initiative will develop safer cycling infrastructure. Upon completion, more than 1 million city’s residents will benefit from more efficient and eco-friendly transportation, helping reduce car usage and lower greenhouse gas emissions by 90,000 tonnes of CO² annually.

This initiative aligns with the EU’s broader goals of achieving climate neutrality while supporting regions most affected by the energy transition, like Hauts-de-France.
