Over €65 million in EU funds for new waste management facilities in Greece's Peloponnese region

To end illegal landfilling and improve environment protection, €65 million from cohesion policy funding will be made available for the upgrade of waste management facilities in Greece's Peloponnese region. The European Commission approved the payment of this amount today.

Three integrated waste management centres, built in the Arkadia, Messinia and Lakonia regional districts, will recover recyclable material using mechanical treatment and produce compost with biological treatment of waste. In addition, two waste transfer stations built in Argolida and in Korinthia will support the operation of the integrated waste management centres.

Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms Raffaele Fitto said: “Modern waste management saves resources and reduces both greenhouse gas emissions and health risks for the population. I am glad that cohesion policy will support the upgrading of waste management facilities in the Peloponnese region as this will  improve the lives of its citizens in a number of concrete ways.”

The upgraded waste management facilities will contribute to reducing health risks, protecting the environment, and meeting the recycling and landfilling targets of the Peloponnese region, bringing its treatment of municipal waste in line with EU rules and good practice.
