EU Cohesion Policy: inauguration of EU-funded train station in Bulgaria

Bulgarian railway infrastructure is being reconstructed in line with the European standards in railway transport. Today the European Commission and Bulgarian institutions are inaugurating the Stara Zagora train station, which the EU co-funded with EUR 5.9 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

The Stara Zagora train station is now completely renovated, including all the installation systems and the reception buildings. A complete architectural renovation of the station was carried out, including among others a replacement of the electricity installation, the water supply, and the sewerage system.

The benefits for the travellers extend far beyond the boundaries of the train station itself. Thanks to the EU support the new railway infrastructure offers adequate, safe, and enjoyable conditions for passengers and ensures a comfortable work environment for employees. The EU-funded project improved services as a whole and the image of railway transport. The works have also increased the energy efficiency of public spaces, introducing smart, modern systems for heating, air conditioning, lighting, information, as well as making the surrounding space compliant with the requirements for accessibility of people with disabilities and disadvantaged people.
