EU Cohesion Policy: €148 million for a just climate transition in Bouches-du-Rhône

€148 million will support a fair transition to a climate-neutral economy of the French ‘departement’ Bouches-du-Rhône in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, following today’s decision of the Commission.

Under the Just Transition Fund (JTF), the EU will support the decarbonisation of the four most local emitting industries (coke manufacturing and fossil fuel refining, metalworking, non-metallic mineral and chemical production) through investments in research and innovation to boost industrial innovation in renewable energy and the recycle of resources. The Fund will also optimise the cycle of materials thanks to more recycled and bio-sourced materials and will support the energy mix  via investments in renewable energy for buildings, wind energy and biomass.

The territories supported by the JTF are identified in the Territorial Just Transition Plans (TJTPs) following a dialogue with the Commission in the framework of the negotiations of the 2021-2027 Partnership Agreements. and with local partnersThe approval of TJTPs opens the door to dedicated financing under the other two pillars of the Just Transition Mechanism (JTM): a just transition scheme under InvestEU and the Public Sector Loan Facility for Just Transition that combines Commission grants with European Investment bank loans. The Commission approved the Partnership Agreement with France in May 2022.
