Commission launches new course for journalists to strengthen education about the EU and Cohesion Policy

Tomorrow, the Commission in collaboration with six European universities and two journalist associations will launch the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), entitled ’Covering Cohesion Policy in Europe.’ Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira will open the launch event via video message.

The course aims to address gaps in journalism education and to promote knowledge about Cohesion Policy and its many benefits for European regions and cities. It is designed for journalism students, professionals, and anyone interested in EU affairs.

Ahead of the event, the Commissioner said: This MOOC brings the world of Cohesion Policy to a classroom near you. It is a great example of pan-European cooperation between universities and shows what can be achieved when we work together. I hope that many journalism students will take the course and feel inspired to talk about Cohesion Policy’s role for long-term, sustainable and balanced growth across the EU.

In 2022, the Commission launched a €1 million call for proposals to create a course focused on Cohesion Policy. The winning proposal was developed by a consortium of institutions, including the Technical University of Dortmund (Germany), the University of Porto (Portugal), University of Wrocław (Poland), the Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and the AP University of Antwerp (Belgium), along with several journalist organisations.

The MOOC is a free, interactive e-learning platform available in all EU languages. It covers key areas such as EU governance, Cohesion Policy, tools available to find data about the EU, cross-border reporting, and digital journalism. Structured into 14 modules, the course spans a full semester. The course can be accessed via the project website
