EU Cohesion Policy: Naples metro line 6 extended thanks to EU funds

Thanks to the EU’s Cohesion Policy, the city of Naples in Italy is inaugurating four new stations of its metro line 6 today. This completes the extension works on the Naples metro which have been ongoing since 2013 with a Cohesion Policy support of €198. 7 million.

The re-opened metro line 6 is increasing the attractiveness of the public transport which will result in less car traffic and road congestion with positive effects on the environment reducing atmospheric pollutants. The improved connection will also have positive socio-economic consequences on a district with high levels of unemployment.

Higher frequency of metro line 6 is planned

Line 6 of the Naples Metro connects the Fuorigrotta district with the city center and port and includes the newly built stations of Arco Mirelli, San Pasquale, Chiaia and Municipio. The current planned frequency is one run every 13.5 minutes for 210 passengers each way.

In programming period 2021-2027, new trains are planned in Naples which will be able to carry about 7,200 passengers per hour and per direction and allow to significantly improve frequency of line 6. When fully operational the planned frequency is one run every 4.5 minutes making the metro an even more attractive transport option and reducing further road congestion.

Cohesion Policy supporting better transport in Italy

In the programming period 2014-2020 Cohesion Policy has been crucial for improving Italy’s public transport. Cohesion Policy Funds have resulted in a total of 500km of new and reconstructed railways and 40 new electric trains in the South.
