iMAL presents its new infrastructures in Brussels

iMAL, the Brussels-based center for digital culture and technology, unveils its new infrastructures after several years of renovation and expansion works. The inauguration is taking place on Wednesday, June 7, and is bringing together important figures from the political and cultural scene of the region. The project has received a financial contribution of 1.4 million EUR from the European Union (ERDF).

The renovation and expansion works of iMAL began in 2016, thanks to the financial support of the European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020 (ERDF). This large-scale project has allowed iMAL to create a space twice as large, designed by the architecture firms Central Office and NP2F. The new infrastructures provide enhanced visibility from the outside and offer iMAL numerous spaces to develop its artistic program.

The official inauguration is honoured by the presence of eminent personalities, highlighting the significance of Brussels' cultural and technological scene. The Minister-President of the Brussels-Capital Region, Rudi Vervoort, will attend the event, underscoring the regional government's commitment to promoting culture and technology. The Mayor of Molenbeek, Catherine Moureaux, will join the meeting, emphasizing iMAL's positive impact on the cultural life of the neighbourhood. Samuël Maenhout from the Representation of the European Commission in Belgium will participate in the inauguration to testify to the European Union's support for this project. Lastly, Lucia Garcia, the Director of iMAL, will be present to welcome the guests and introduce the new facilities.

Thanks to the renovation and expansion works, iMAL now boasts a modern and suitable space to showcase its innovative artistic program. The new facilities include versatile spaces, exhibition halls, creative labs, studios, and co-working spaces for artists, researchers, and entrepreneurs. Visitors can also enjoy a cafeteria and a specialized bookstore focusing on digital arts and technological culture. The new infrastructures strengthen iMAL's position as a center of excellence for digital creation and provide new opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

iMAL is currently showcasing "The Artwork as a Living System", a retrospective exhibition that delves into the groundbreaking contributions of Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau since the early 1990s. This exhibition establishes a connection between the conventional theme of art and nature and the cutting-edge artistic techniques employed in virtual, sentient, and interactive projects.
