New UIB building an EU investment in future of Balearic Island education

The recently inaugurated "Margalida Comas i Camps" Health Sciences interdepartmental building at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) is an investment in the future of education in the region. This state-of-the-art facility, funded under the European Union’s Recovery Assistance for Cohesion and the Territories of Europe (REACT-EU) programme, puts sustainability at the core of education and exemplifies Europe's commitment to a green, digital, and resilient recovery.

Constructed with an investment of €6.9 million targeting crisis repair in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the "Margalida Comas i Camps" building spans over 6,000 square metres. With an overarching objective to improve infrastructure and equipment in higher education, the facility houses Psychology, Nursing, and Physiotherapy departments, addressing critical educational needs by promoting human capital and providing qualifications to the Balearic population.

Benchmark for environmental efficiency

The Health Sciences building sets a new benchmark for environmental efficiency, incorporating strategies to reduce energy demand and utilising energy-efficient structural and construction approaches. The building is conceived as an autonomous energy saving and decentralising system of local energy distribution. It prioritises passive and simple systems, making it the most efficient building on the UIB campus. As such, the new building will help to advance the UIB's objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2030.

Honouring Margalida Comas i Camps

The University of the Balearic Islands governing board unanimously approved the naming of the interdepartmental building after Menorcan biologist and educator Margalida Comas i Camps. This aligns with the University’s dedication to recognising and celebrating contributions from women in academia.

This milestone project is made possible through the REACT-EU programme, which provided 100% co-financing amounting to a total contribution of €6.9 million. REACT-EU supports investments that foster crisis-repair capacities, contribute to a green, digital, and resilient recovery of the economy, and aid in job creation and youth employment measures.

About REACT-EU

As part of the NextGenerationEU recover plan, REACT-EU is providing an additional EUR 50.6 billion to support crisis response, repair measures, and long-term recovery plans in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and its social consequences. This funding is a top-up to 2014-2020 European Regional Development Fund and European Social Fund allocations and is in addition to Cohesion Fund allocations in 2021-2027.

REACT-EU continues and extends the crisis response and repair measures delivered through the Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative and the Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative Plus and constitutes a bridge to the long-term recovery plan.
